Check image color shift on Mac before handoff

A color problem gets hard to discuss after the image is already in a client folder, product page, support ticket, or public thread. Sample the exported copy while the source is still nearby.

01Open source and export in the same Mac state

Color comparisons fall apart when the images are viewed in different contexts. Open the source image and the exported copy on the same display, with the same appearance mode, brightness, and surrounding background when possible.

If the export is a screenshot, compare the screenshot file to the app state it came from. If the export is a marketing crop, compare the crop to the full asset. If the export is compressed for upload, compare the compressed copy rather than the intermediate file.

Apple's screenshot documentation and Preview image guidance are enough for many simple checks: capture, crop, resize, and inspect the exported file before the file leaves your Mac.

02Sample roles instead of random pixels

A single pixel from a gradient, antialiased edge, shadow, or transparent overlay can send you in the wrong direction. Pick stable roles: primary accent, button fill, label text, muted text, background, border, warning state, or exported icon body.

TeenyColor uses macOS NSColorSampler, converts the picked color to sRGB, and writes the selected format to the pasteboard. The local source supports Hex, lowercase hex, RGB, RGB decimal, HSL, HSB/HSV, SwiftUI Color, UIColor, and CSS rgba.

Name values while you sample. "hero accent source" and "hero accent export" are easier to compare than two unnamed hex values in history. Pin the value that should survive the handoff. Leave suspect values unpinned until you decide whether the export needs to change.

03Compare only equivalent samples

The source and export need to be comparable. A 1x source view and a scaled-down export do not always expose the same pixel. A transparent PNG on a white checkerboard and the same PNG on a dark page do not show the same visual result. A compressed JPEG may blend edges that were separate in the original.

For UI images, sample larger filled areas before antialiased text edges. For screenshots, sample the final image at the size the recipient will see. For icons, sample the body color and the edge separately so a compression artifact does not look like a brand change.

If the source is a PDF rather than an image file, use the narrower workflow for picking colors from a PDF on Mac. It treats the PDF as rendered review evidence and records the page number with the sampled value.

If the numbers differ but the visible result is acceptable, record the decision. Handoff QA is not about preserving every exact pixel. It is about preserving the colors that change recognition, readability, or trust.

04Use ColorSync when the profile is suspicious

TeenyColor tells you what the visible pixel resolves to. It does not explain every reason the file got there. Use ColorSync Utility when a file has a surprising profile, a display profile changed, two apps disagree, or the exported image looks different even when the sampled roles seem close.

Apple's ColorSync Utility guide describes color profiles as a way to keep image colors consistent across devices, and its profile tools can view and compare profile gamuts. Apple also documents display color profile settings in System Settings.

That matters because an image handoff often crosses contexts: your display, the recipient's display, a browser, a product page, a support system, or a store upload form. A local picker is the first evidence. ColorSync is the profile check.

05Write down the handoff decision

The final note should be short: source file, exported copy, sampled roles, expected values if there are any, actual values, profile clue if relevant, and the decision. "Export is acceptable" is fine if the image still reads correctly.

When the export fails, name the failure. "Hero accent export sampled #E65D2E instead of approved #FF6B35 after JPEG compression" is actionable. "Image looks different" is not.
